Cream Charger Cost Per Gram: What You Really Pay

One large cream charger tank next to a row of six 8g cream charger bulbs for cost per gram comparison

The sticker price on a cream charger tells you very little about what you are actually paying for gas. A single 3.3 L tank and a 4.4 L tank look similar at a glance, yet one can cost noticeably less per gram of nitrous oxide inside it. If you run a café, bakery or catering kitchen — or you simply go through a lot of whipped cream at home — the number worth tracking is the cream charger cost per gram.

Below we break that maths down with our current tank and bulk-pack pricing, show how the figure moves as you scale up, and explain where the biggest savings actually sit for Australian kitchens. You can compare every current option on our shop page.

How to Calculate Cream Charger Cost Per Gram

Food-grade nitrous oxide is sold by nominal capacity, and for practical budgeting you can treat 1 litre as roughly 1,000 g of gas. That gives a formula you can apply to any format, tank or cartridge:

  • Cost per gram = total price ÷ total grams of gas
  • Cost per 100 g = price ÷ (litres × 10)
  • Cost per litre of gas = price ÷ litres

Take a 3.3 L tank at $80. That is 3,300 g of gas, so 80 ÷ 3,300 = about 2.4 cents per gram, or $2.42 per 100 g. The same tank bought through a city delivery page at $85 works out to $2.58 per 100 g. Small differences in price show up quickly once you are buying several tanks a month.

Cost Per Gram by Tank Size

Bigger tanks are usually the better buy per gram — but not always, and not by as much as people assume. The table below uses our current single-unit and small-pack pricing.

FormatNominal capacityGas contentPrice (AUD)Cost per 100 g
IGNITE / ULTRA 3.3 L tank3.3 L3,300 g$80 – $85$2.42 – $2.58
IGNITE 4.4 L cream charger tank4.4 L4,400 g$98$2.23
6 × IGNITE 1.1 L canisters6.6 L6,600 g$135 – $145$2.05 – $2.20
6 × ULTRA 1.1 L aluminium6.6 L6,600 g$200 – $205$3.03 – $3.11

The headline here is that a 4.4 L tank at $98 lands at $2.23 per 100 g, while a 3.3 L tank at $80 is $2.42. The larger tank wins on cost per gram, and it also means fewer tank changes during service. Aluminium 1.1 L canisters cost the most per gram ($3.03–$3.11), which is expected: you are paying for a lighter, more portable body and greater flexibility at the pass, not for the cheapest gas in the range. If your priority is portability, that premium is worth it; if it is volume, move up in size instead. Our tank size comparison covers that trade-off in more detail.

Bulk Pricing: Where the Real Savings Are

The gap between a single tank and a bulk pack is where cream charger pricing changes character. These are our current limited-time packs, with the per-gram figure calculated the same way as above.

PackTotal gasPrice (AUD)Cost per 100 g
3 × 3.3 L + free 1.1 L11 L$220$2.00
5 × 3.3 L + 1 free 3.3 L19.8 L$300$1.52
5 × 4.4 L + 1 free 4.4 L26.4 L$399$1.51
10 × 4.4 L + 2 free 4.4 L52.8 L$749$1.42
20 × 3.3 L + 2 free 3.3 L72.6 L$1,000$1.38

Moving from a single 3.3 L tank to our 20-tank pack takes the cost from $2.42 per 100 g down to $1.38 per 100 g — roughly 43% less per gram of gas for the same product. The five-tank pack (5 × 4.4 L + 1 free) is often the practical middle ground for busy kitchens: it brings the rate close to the largest pack without tying up capital in stock you may not turn over quickly.

Note that per-gram savings only pay off if the gas is used before it sits idle. Nitrous oxide tanks have a long shelf life when stored upright and cool, but a pack that lasts nine months is only a bargain if your volume genuinely supports it. For high-volume buyers, our 20-tank pack is the lowest rate we offer.

Tanks vs 8 g Cartridges: The Per-Gram Maths

A standard 8 g cream charger cartridge holds 8 g of gas. A 1.1 L tank holds roughly 1,100 g, which is about 138 cartridges worth of gas, and a 3.3 L tank is roughly 412 cartridges. Working through the same per-gram formula, even a modest assumed cartridge price of $1 each puts 138 cartridges at about $138 — against roughly $80 of tank gas for the equivalent volume. (That $1 figure is an illustrative example, not a quoted retail price; plug in whatever you currently pay and the comparison follows the same formula.)

Cartridges still make sense for occasional use, for front-of-house finishing, and where a small, light format matters more than the rate. Tanks win once you are producing consistently, because you are buying gas rather than packaging, and because you spend less time swapping chargers mid-service. Whichever route you take, buy food-grade N2O and follow the manufacturer’s handling guidance; spent cylinders should be handled as described in our disposal guide.

What Actually Drives Your Real Cost Per Serve

Cost per gram is the right unit for buying, but cost per serve is what shows up in your books. A useful rule of thumb for culinary work is that one 8 g charger dispenses around 0.5 L of whipped cream, depending on fat content, temperature and technique. A 3.3 L tank is therefore roughly 206 litres of finished cream, which puts the gas cost at about $0.39 per litre of whipped cream at $80 a tank.

Four factors move that number more than the headline price does:

  • Waste at the end of service — partially used tanks and loose nozzles leak gas you have paid for; check connections and store tanks upright with the valve closed.
  • Cream temperature — warm cream whips less efficiently, so you use more gas for the same volume.
  • Over-whipping — past soft peaks you are adding gas for a result you cannot sell, then discarding it.
  • Format fit — buying 1.1 L canisters for high-volume production is the most common way kitchens pay a premium without noticing.

Choosing the Right Format for Your Volume

  • Home and hobby bakers: one 3.3 L tank covers months of desserts, and there is no reason to over-buy on gas.
  • Cafés and bakeries: pair two 3.3 L tanks so one is always ready, or step into a five-tank pack for a lower rate.
  • Catering and high-volume kitchens: 4.4 L tanks plus a ten- or twenty-tank pack gives the lowest cost per gram and the fewest interruptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it cheaper to buy cream chargers in bulk?

Yes, on a per-gram basis. Our largest current pack works out to $1.38 per 100 g against $2.42 for a single 3.3 L tank. Buy bulk only at a volume you will use within the product’s shelf life.

How much does a litre of nang gas cost?

Using current pricing, a single 3.3 L tank works out to about $24.24 per litre of gas and a 4.4 L tank about $22.27. At the top bulk tier the rate falls to roughly $13.77 per litre.

Are tanks cheaper per gram than 8 g chargers?

Generally yes, because you are buying gas rather than dozens of individual cartridges. One 3.3 L tank holds the equivalent of about 412 cartridges, so the per-gram difference is substantial once you are producing regularly.

Does delivery change the cost per gram?

Delivery is part of your total cost, so factor it in when comparing suppliers. We deliver across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, typically within 10–45 minutes in metro areas — which matters if a shortage mid-service would otherwise cost you sales.

The Bottom Line

Compare cream chargers the way you compare any other ingredient: by unit cost. On current pricing, the range runs from about $3.11 per 100 g for small aluminium canisters down to $1.38 per 100 g on our largest bulk pack. Match the format to your real weekly volume, keep tanks upright and sealed, and the cost per gram becomes a number you can plan around rather than guess at.
